Notes adapted from "How to Study the Bible" by John MacArthur
Scripture is the Source of...
John 17:14-19 (the High Priestly Prayer - Jesus prays for us)
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
If you abide in my word . . . you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Psalm 19:8 (David)
the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart
Luke 11:28 (Jesus)
Blessed (happy) are those who hear the word of God and keep it!
1 John 1:4 NKJV
And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
Victory over Sin
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Victory over Satan
Matthew 4:1-11 (Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness)
In v. 4, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3:
It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Victory over Demons
Luke 4:33-36 (Jesus heals a man with an unclean demon)
And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
Victory over Temptation
Ephesians 6:11,17 (The Whole Armor of God)
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil . . . and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
4. Growth (Nourishment, Bringing Forth, Bearing Fruit)
1 Peter 2:2 NASB
long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart
1 Timothy 4:6 NASB
In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.
1 John 2:12-14 (characteristics of different levels of maturity)
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children, because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
5. Power (Transformative, Efficacious)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes
put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
1 John 2:27 (Warning against false teachers)
But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
